Laser bevel cutting: prepare parts for welding in a single operation

In the manufacture of metal structures, boilermaking and welded construction, preparing the edges for welding is a critical operation traditionally carried out after cutting, in a separate process. Laser bevel cutting changes the game: it lets you prepare the part for welding directly during cutting, in a single operation.

At Talleres Feudo we have incorporated this technology into our thick sheet laser cutting machines, becoming one of the few suppliers in Spain to offer 360° double bevel in thicknesses up to 30 mm. The result is a much faster order-to-delivery process, with less handling and a real cost saving.

Combined with our bending, robotic welding and assembly services, we offer an integrated metal transformation service, from the sheet to the finished assembly.

Concept

What exactly is bevel cutting?

Bevel cutting consists of cutting the sheet at an angle, instead of the conventional straight 90° cut. This angle creates a preparation on the edge of the part that helps the weld bead penetrate.

V
V bevel

An angle on one face of the sheet. The most common preparation for welded joints of medium thickness.

X
X bevel (double V)

An angle on both faces of the sheet. Ideal for large thicknesses welded from both sides.

K
K bevel

An asymmetric combination of bevels for specific joint configurations.

Y
Y bevel

A bevel with a straight root face, combining penetration and control of the weld root.

Traditionally, these preparations were made by manual grinding, machining or bevelling machines after cutting. That means an extra operation, more time, more handling of heavy parts and more cost. With laser bevel cutting, all of this is done in a single pass on the cutting machine.

A distinctive capability

360° double bevel: what it means and why it matters

Our laser cutting machines do not just make a single bevel. They can produce a double bevel (on both faces of the sheet) and do it in 360°, that is, in every direction and contour of the part, including curves, corners and complex geometries.

  • The entire perimeter of a part can be bevelled, not just the straight edges.
  • Different bevel angles can be combined in different areas of the same part.
  • Parts leave the machine fully prepared for welding.
  • No direction limitation: the head rotates 360° to follow any contour.

This capability is something very few laser cutting suppliers currently have. Most workshops that offer laser cutting can only make straight cuts, with bevelling done as a subsequent operation. At Talleres Feudo, we integrate it directly into the cutting process.

Benefits

How much does laser bevel cutting save?

The saving happens across several stages of the manufacturing process.

01
Eliminates subsequent bevelling

Transport to the bevelling area, clamping each part, bevelling with a grinder or milling machine and intermediate checks all disappear. The part leaves the machine ready to weld.

02
Reduces lead time

By eliminating a whole intermediate operation, the lead time drops. On projects with many bevelled parts (structures, beams, profiles) the reduction can be several days.

03
Less handling, less risk

Thick sheets are heavy and hard to handle. Fewer operations mean fewer overhead-crane movements, less risk of knocks and lower internal logistics cost.

04
Greater precision and repeatability

The laser bevel is far more precise and repeatable than manual bevelling: better fit between parts, more uniform welds, and fewer rejects and reworks.

Sectors

Which sectors is laser bevel cutting ideal for?

It adds value especially where welding of thick sheet is routine.

01
Metal construction and structures

Beams, columns, structural nodes and anchor plates. Welded joints require edge preparation that is now integrated into the cut.

02
Cranes and lifting equipment

Booms, towers and frames. Large-thickness parts with multiple welded joints.

03
Energy: wind, solar and hydro

Wind towers, support structures and pressure ducts with demanding welding requirements.

04
Rail and transport

Frames, chassis and wagon structures, with strict weld-quality and traceability requirements.

05
Boilermaking and pressure vessels

Shells, heads and flanges. Weld preparation is often mandatory by standard.

06
Industrial and agricultural machinery

Machine frames, articulated arms and implement structures with medium- and thick-gauge welded joints.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about laser bevel cutting

What is the maximum thickness that can be bevelled with a laser?+

On our machines, laser bevel cutting is available for thicknesses up to 30 mm in carbon steel.

Does laser bevelling replace mechanical bevelling?+

Yes, in most cases. The bevel produced by laser has a precision and finish quality equal to or better than mechanical bevelling, with the advantage of being done in the same cutting operation.

Can bevels be made on parts with complex geometries?+

Yes. Our cutting head rotates 360°, allowing bevels on curves, corners and any contour, not just straight edges.

What bevel angles can you produce?+

The angle is configurable to suit each project. The most common for weld preparation are 30°, 37.5° and 45°, but other values can be programmed.

What bevel types can you produce?+

We produce single and double bevels in the usual joint configurations: V bevel, X bevel (double V), K bevel and Y bevel, covering practically any weld preparation.

Do I need to indicate the bevel on my drawings?+

Yes, it is recommended. Indicate on your DXF/DWG files which edges need bevelling, the type (V, X, K, Y) and the required angle. If in doubt, our technical team will advise you.

Is bevel cutting more expensive than straight cutting?+

It has a slightly higher cost than straight cutting, but the total saving is significant by eliminating the subsequent bevelling operation, the extra handling and the process time.
